StatusConfirmed by Saudi state news agency SPA.

BNP Paribas, France's largest bank, has received a regional headquarters licence in Saudi Arabia, as reported by the Saudi state news agency SPA. This move is part of Saudi Arabia's broader strategy to attract multinational companies to relocate their regional headquarters to Riyadh, positioning the city as a leading financial hub in the Gulf alongside Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the UAE. The Saudi government has emphasized that companies without a Riyadh headquarters may lose access to state contracts. The licence was announced during a meeting in Paris between Saudi Arabia's investment minister, Fahd bin Abduljalil al Saif, and BNP Chairman Jean Lemierre. BNP Paribas already has a presence in the Middle East, with offices in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

Why this mattersThis development is significant for firms operating in Madinah, as it underscores the importance of establishing a regional headquarters in Riyadh to secure state contracts. For architecture and development practices, this could influence project opportunities and partnerships, particularly in the hospitality and mixed-use sectors. The move also highlights the competitive landscape among Gulf cities to attract multinational firms, which could impact regional development strategies.
