Saudi Arabia performs its first robot-assisted breast reconstruction in Riyadh
The Ministry of Interior's Medical Services, represented by Security Forces Hospital in Riyadh, has successfully performed the first breast reconstruction surgery of its kind in the Kingdom using robotic surgical technology. The procedure was carried out by a specialized medical team using robotic-assisted breast reconstruction techniques.
The patient was a 43-year-old woman who had previously undergone a nipple- and skin-sparing mastectomy following a breast cancer diagnosis. The surgery involved harvesting skin and fatty tissue from the abdominal area and transferring them to the chest using microsurgical techniques.
This highly delicate procedure is traditionally performed through conventional surgical methods. It requires a specialized medical team and meticulous planning.
The robotic technology offers the advantage of preserving the integrity of the abdominal wall through a minimally invasive approach involving very small incisions. This helps reduce the risk of complications associated with conventional surgery, particularly hernias and abdominal bulging, while enhancing surgical precision.
Breast reconstruction holds significant medical and psychological importance for women who have undergone mastectomies due to cancer. These procedures play a vital role in improving quality of life, promoting psychological well-being and restoring self-confidence, contributing positively to patients' overall health.
The achievement reflects the advancement in adopting and applying modern surgical technologies. It also continues the Ministry of Interior's Medical Services' efforts to embrace the latest medical and surgical innovations, advance specialized healthcare services, and enhance the efficiency and quality of care for beneficiaries.
