SFDA Authorizes Two Saudi AI-Enabled Medical Software Products

· Riyadh
StatusConfirmed by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has granted marketing authorization for two locally developed, AI-enabled medical software products named 'Dental IQ' and 'SAARIA'. These products are designed to support dental and ophthalmic diagnosis. The authorization followed a comprehensive regulatory review, including assessments of technical documentation and clinical evidence to ensure the software's safety, performance, and effectiveness for its intended uses. 'Dental IQ' employs deep learning algorithms to analyze dental X-ray images, aiding in the identification of potential pathological findings such as dental caries and periodontal disease. This assists healthcare practitioners in improving diagnostic accuracy and informing treatment planning. 'SAARIA' uses AI technologies to analyze retinal images, supporting the screening of diabetic patients and early detection of diabetic retinopathy, facilitating timely referrals and interventions. These products mark a significant milestone as the first Saudi-developed AI-enabled medical software solutions in dentistry and ophthalmology to receive SFDA marketing authorization. Developed by Saudi startups specializing in AI-driven digital health solutions, the companies participated in the SFDA’s Innovative Medical Devices Pathway, receiving regulatory guidance and support. They conducted local clinical studies to validate the software's performance and committed to post-marketing follow-up plans. The SFDA emphasizes that AI-enabled software outputs are intended to support, not replace, clinical decision-making. This authorization reflects SFDA's commitment to fostering innovation in digital health and aligns with the Health Sector Transformation Program and Saudi Vision 2030.

Why this mattersThis development is significant for healthcare projects in Madinah, as it introduces advanced diagnostic tools that can enhance the quality of medical services offered. For developers and design practices, the integration of AI-enabled medical software in healthcare facilities could influence the design and infrastructure requirements, potentially leading to new opportunities in the healthcare sector. The localization of such technologies also aligns with broader national objectives, potentially impacting future project planning and execution.
