Alstom has secured a contract worth approximately €460 million (around US$540 million) from the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) to supply additional driverless metro trains for Riyadh Metro Lines 3, 4, and 6 and integrate them into the existing metro infrastructure. The contract will expand the Riyadh Metro fleet and increase passenger capacity, while enabling more frequent services to meet growing demand across the capital’s rapidly expanding public transport network. Under the contract, Alstom will supply additional Metropolis driverless metro trains, which will be integrated into Riyadh Metro’s fully automated operations. The company will also maintain the new trains under its existing operation and maintenance (O&M) contract for Lines 3, 4, and 6. The new trains will be integrated with Alstom’s Urbalis communications-based train control (CBTC) signalling technology, supporting higher service frequencies, shorter passenger waiting times, and improved operational flexibility. The additional fleet will particularly support the Yellow Line (Line 4), which is planned to serve the 2030 World Expo in Riyadh. The combination of Alstom’s Metropolis trains and Urbalis CBTC technology is designed to enable safe, reliable, and high-frequency metro services during peak periods. The latest contract builds on Alstom’s existing involvement in Riyadh Metro. The company has previously delivered 116 driverless trains for the Riyadh Metro network. Since the network began passenger operations in late 2024, Riyadh Metro has carried more than 100 million passengers, becoming an important component of daily transportation in the Saudi capital. The additional trains are expected to increase network capacity and allow RCRC to operate services at higher frequencies as passenger demand continues to grow. Alstom has maintained a long-standing partnership with RCRC and continues to support the development and operation of Riyadh’s automated metro system. The company said the latest order reflects its continued role in supporting Riyadh’s mobility development and the expansion of sustainable public transport infrastructure in the capital. Mohamed Khalil, Managing Director of Alstom’s MENA Regional Headquarters, said the company was proud to continue supporting RCRC in expanding Riyadh’s metro network, adding that the additional vehicles would help the system respond to growing demand while maintaining a high-quality passenger experience. Alstom has been present in Saudi Arabia since 1951 and has contributed to the Kingdom’s transport and infrastructure development across power and rail projects. The company has established its Middle East regional headquarters in Riyadh and is continuing to invest in local capabilities, people, and knowledge transfer, with a focus on developing Saudi expertise in transport systems and mobility technologies. The latest Riyadh Metro contract further strengthens Alstom’s involvement in Saudi Arabia’s efforts to develop smart, sustainable, and high-capacity public transportation infrastructure.

Why this mattersThis contract is significant for developers and architects in Madinah as it highlights the growing demand for advanced public transportation solutions in Saudi Arabia, which could influence future urban planning and infrastructure projects. The expansion of the Riyadh Metro with additional driverless trains may set a benchmark for similar projects in other cities, including Madinah, potentially affecting the design and implementation of local transport systems. Additionally, Alstom's continued investment in local capabilities and knowledge transfer could lead to increased opportunities for collaboration with local firms in the development of transport infrastructure.
