Deputy Minister of Transport and Logistics Dr. Rumaih Al-Rumaih announced that Riyadh’s public transport network has recorded nearly 500 million users in less than two years since its launch. This announcement was made during a dialogue session at the 25th World Energy Congress 2026 in Riyadh. The Riyadh Metro network, which comprises 85 stations, is complemented by a bus network powered by a combination of electricity and conventional fuels.

Dr. Al-Rumaih emphasized the Kingdom's commitment to expanding public transport networks across various cities, aiming for greater reliance on electric transport and a diversified energy mix. He highlighted that the Riyadh Metro is the largest metro network ever built simultaneously, reflecting a significant shift in mobility patterns as residents increasingly use public transport over private cars.

The deputy minister also discussed the transport and logistics sector's role in global energy demand, accounting for approximately 30 percent. He stressed the importance of reducing carbon emissions through diverse solutions and technologies tailored to each mode of transport.

Dr. Al-Rumaih noted that the Saudi Green Initiative provides a framework for achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, with the transport and logistics sector playing a pivotal role through initiatives in the National Transport and Logistics Strategy.

Why this mattersThis milestone in Riyadh's public transport usage indicates a shift towards sustainable urban mobility, which could influence future infrastructure projects in Madinah.
