Saudi Arabia's journey towards modernization began under King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud, who laid the foundations of a modern state through the establishment of government institutions, educational systems, and healthcare structures. The King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives documents these developments, highlighting the growth of government administration, education, and public healthcare.

As the Kingdom progressed, successive Saudi kings expanded these foundations, enhancing infrastructure and public services through oil revenues. By the 21st century, the focus shifted from establishing basic institutions to preparing them for a rapidly changing future.

In 2016, Saudi Arabia launched Vision 2030, a framework aimed at transforming the nation into a vibrant society, a thriving economy, and an ambitious nation. This initiative has led to significant developments in tourism, entertainment, culture, and sports, as well as increased opportunities for women and youth.

The 2025 Vision 2030 annual report highlights the transformation since 2016, noting the evolution of institutions, expanded opportunities, and strengthened government capabilities. As Saudi Arabia entered the Vision's third phase in 2026, the focus shifted towards sustaining implementation and achieving national priorities.

Why this mattersFor developers and architects in Madinah, the Vision 2030 initiative signals potential growth in sectors like tourism and entertainment, which may lead to increased demand for hospitality and mixed-use projects. The emphasis on economic diversification and infrastructure development could also present new opportunities for construction and design practices in the region.
