The municipalities and housing sector in Saudi Arabia recorded more than three million volunteer hours during the first half of 2026. Over 179,000 male and female volunteers participated in 6,700 volunteer opportunities. These activities were conducted through municipalities, municipal authorities, and housing entities, with the involvement of nonprofit associations and organizations. The volunteer opportunities spanned several areas related to municipal and housing sector work, including support for housing services, parks and public facilities, pilgrim services, environmental safety, roads, and basic infrastructure. In 2025, the sector had recorded more than 300,000 volunteers participating in various areas, including housing, urban landscape improvement, monitoring and inspection, food preservation, dignified care of the deceased, and comprehensive volunteering. The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing emphasized its ongoing oversight of the volunteer work system, aiming to empower its entities and partners, enhance integration with the nonprofit sector, and expand volunteer opportunities to improve the quality of initiatives and maximize their social and development impact.

Why this mattersThis development highlights the growing role of volunteerism in supporting municipal and housing services, which could influence project timelines and resource allocation in Madinah. The emphasis on integration with the nonprofit sector may present opportunities for partnerships in community-driven projects. The focus on environmental safety and infrastructure aligns with sustainable development goals, potentially impacting future urban planning and development strategies.
